Decorating Ideas

Gingerbread Fun
Make cut-outs of giant gingerbread men from construction paper to decorate the walls.

Center Of Attention
For a centerpiece, set out rolling pins, measuring cups filled with flour and sugar, cookie cutters and wooden spoons. Place chef's hats around the table that you can make ahead of time out of white paper and write each child's name on it with a red marker. To make the Chef's Hat: Horizontally cut five strips to about half the width of an 8 ½ x 11 white sheet of paper. Do not cut all the way through the sheet. Roll over and tape down the tip of each strip so that the tip is curved, not flat. Turn over so taped side is facing down. Write the name centered on the uncut end of the paper. To form the hat, tape together the two ends of the sheet so that the tips curve in towards the middle of the hat. You can also do this with a larger sheet of paper to actually fit the guests.

Apron Activity
Turn plastic placemats into festive aprons by punching holes at the top and sides to tie around neck and waist. Decorate with name tags and have the children create their own designs with markers.

Activities

Cut Out Cookies
Prepare the 1001 Sugar Cookie dough before of the party. Then at the party, roll it out and supply the kids with various cookie cutters and decorative sprinkles to bake fresh at the party.

Cookie Mix In A Jar
Help the kids follow the instructions for this baker's version of sand art. They'll have fun measuring out the ingredients during the party. Don't forget the recipe card! It then becomes a neat take-home treat for each child to bake later on with mom. (For kids, we recommend using plastic jars rather than glass for safety.)

Personalized Bakery Boxes

Let the kids decorate white bakery boxes with stamps, stickers and markers. When the cookies are done, they can fill up the boxes.

Game Suggestions

Guess How Many Chocolate Chip Cookies in the Jar
A few days before the party, have the birthday boy or girl count the chocolate chips as they fill a jar. Then put together a kid's apron, chef's hat and rolling pin for a prize.

Pie Eating Contest
Fill pie crusts with whipped cream a few minutes before this game and then top with banana slivers or a cherry. Line pies and the kids up along a long table. Then with their hands on their back blow the whistle! The first one to eat the whole pie wins. Don't forget the napkins!

The Baker's Egg Race
Split up guests into two teams. For each team supply them with a hard-boiled egg, a wooden spoon, an apron, a chef's hat and oven mitts. Each team member has to relay race against each other by putting on the baker's costume, then balancing the egg on the spoon as they race across the yard and back to pass on the costume and egg to the next player. You may want set up a cone or chair at the far end for them to loop around. Just don't drop the egg!

Party Favors

  • A cookie recipe attached to fun-shaped cookie cutters.
  • After you've filled up the baker’s box with the cookies, tie it up with red string and attach a tag that has the birthday boy's or girl's name on it, i.e. Sally's Baking Birthday Bash.
  • Cookie Mix in a Jar

Not all activities or party ideas are recommended for all ages. For the safety of all in attendance, no party should be held without adult supervision.
